We have created the following Jargon Buster as it contains many of the terms that you may see within our website and be unsure of what they mean.
Rotary Encoder Multi-Control
The rotary commander works like a joystick, giving the user control over the head unit. Rotate it left, right, up and down to access different functions.
Bluetooth
Units with Bluetooth built in mean that the user can use their Bluetooth enabled telephone in their car and make and receive calls handsfree.
Flip-down Face
Units with a flip down face generally have a larger display, as the CD slot is hidden neatly behind
Steering Remote Control Ready
With an optional adapter, you can control a head unit from the steering-wheel remote control that comes factory standard with your car.
MP3/WMA Playback with ID3/WMA Tag
Most CD receivers are compatible with WMA (Windows MediaMT Audio) and MP3 supporting ID3 Version 2 tags. Burning CD-R/RW discs with MP3 and/or WMA files using a PC has never been easier, and the head units provide immediate playback. Thanks to sophisticated compression technologies, a single MP3/WMA disc can contain as much content as 20 ordinary CDs.
CD/CD-R/CD-RW Compatible
CD-RW (CD-Rewritable) lets you make your own CDs and play them back on CD players. And although CD-RW's low reflectivity can cause tracking problems, ADS (Advanced Digital Servo) effectively solves this problem. Most JVC CD receivers are compatible with CD-RW, CD-R and, of course, CD discs.
iPod ready
iPod ready unit mean that the user can connect their iPod to the head unit and play all of their iPod music through the car head unit and speakers
Works with iPhone
These units are compatible with iPhone for playback and Bluetooth if applicable.
RDS Tuner
The RDS (Radio Data System) tuner provides convenient control over reception. With Network Tracking Reception and the high-speed PLL circuit, you can continuously enjoy the same programme while you travel: the tuner is automatically kept tuned to the strongest of all frequencies available. Automatic Traffic Information Reception provides traffic updates, even while a CD or cassette is playing. In addition to displaying the name of the station being received, PTY (Programme Type) Search quickly accesses programmes of a specified type like news, sports or various types of music. PTY Standby automatically switches to a station broadcasting the selected programme type. Enhanced Other Network makes RDS capability even more versatile, allowing access to networks not tuned to.
24-bit Resolution Burr-Brown 1-bit D/A Converter
The 24-bit resolution 1-bIt DAC provides higher resolution combined with lower distortion, thanks to the 24-bit requantization for CD playback.
MOS-FET Power Amp
Unlike conventional bipolar transistors, MOS-FET devices do not generate crossover distortion when boosting voltage in the power amplifier. The result is superb signal purity. MOS-FET also features a higher signal-to-noise ratio, which means high frequencies are not degraded by noise.
3-Band Parametric iEQ
You can adjust centre frequency curves, bandwidth, and level independently for bass, midrange, and treble, to optimise the sound for the music you listen to.
RCA Pre-Outs
RCA pre-outs allow a system to be expanded with separate amplifiers.
Subwoofer Out Terminals/Gold-plated Subwoofer Out Terminals
Connect an external amplifier to a head unit with subwoofer out terminals, and your subwoofer is good to go. A low-pass filter is built into the system, making a crossover network unnecessary. You can boost or decrease the level and select the cut-off frequency (Low/Mid/High) right from the dash, depending on your subwoofer's capabilities and the other speakers in your car audio system.
Front AUX Input
A front AUX in allows portable music devices such as an iPod or MP3 player to be connected to the head unit, a 3.5 jack lead is required.
ISO Connector
ISO connectors allow for easy, error-free hook-up most cars available in Europe.
Remote Ready
Remote ready units can have an optional remote control added, but will not come with a remote as standard
USB
Many head units now have either a front USB port for music stored on a memory stick
SD Card input
Some head units now offer playback of music stored on an SD Card
Direct Subwoofer Drive
Units with this features are able to have a subwoofer added without the need for an additional amplifier
Touch Screen
Units with touchscreen can have all features accessed this way, they are usually easily customisable with different backgrounds and images
Video output/inputs
A unit with this feature allows a user to connect AV devices such as a camcorder or games console
Navigation Ready
These multimedia unit can have an optional navigation module added to enable the user to see navigation on the screen of the unit
Double DIN Units
These units are twice the side of a single DIN unit
Removable Front Panel
The front panel of the unit can be removed when leaving the car as a security feature
